Rosewater, Nightingale, and Gunpowder: A Sensory History of the Islamic World, c. 1500-1900

NWO Vici Grant, 2023-2028

Extending our earlier work on the senses of Islam to include the early modern and modern periods, researchers of the “Rosewater, Nightingale, and Gunpowder” project focus on the sensory history of the three “gunpowder empires” of the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal dynasties, and also on the transformations that occurred in the colonial era. Moreover, we are working towards the completion of volume 1 (Concepts and Issues) and volume 3 (16th-20th centuries) of a multi-author reader in Islamic Sensory History (Leiden, forthcoming). This subproject is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) and received additional support from the Ammodo Foundation for Arts, Architecture, and Science.
